    Completing Your Legacy Interview

California Estate Planning • Serving Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Irvine, and the Surrounding Areas

As a part of every Estate Plan at Meier Law Firm, we include our special Legacy Interview.  This part of your planning gives you the opportunity to pass along your insights, wisdom, values, special memories, hopes, and love for those who mean the most to you.   The Legacy Interview is an audio recording that you leave as a gift to your loved ones so they can know who you were and what you wanted for them.

We offer two different ways to complete this part of your plan:

    1. Meeting with us. You can make an appointment with our office for a one-hour time slot where we will sit with you and walk you through the Legacy Interview process.  Call us at 949.718.0420 or email us at office@meierfirm.com.
    2. Doing it on your own. You can complete the Legacy Interview from the privacy of your home by following easy step- by- step instructions.

Instructions for each option are below.

    Meeting with Us

    1. Contact our office to secure a one-hour session to conduct the interview. Call us at 949.718.0420 or email us at office@meierfirm.com
    2. Download the Legacy Interview Questionnaire.
    3. Print the questionnaire, then highlight or circle 15 to 20 of the questions that you would like to include in your interview. You can also add additional questions you would like to answer.
    4. Think about or even write down the important points you would like to cover in your answers. If you are doing the interview with a spouse, you may want to discuss whether one or both of you will be responding to each question.
    5. Bring your questions to the interview.
    6. Share your legacy with your loved ones.
    7. We will save your recording and provide it to you on a cd, which you can put in your estate planning binder.

    Doing it on your own

    1. Download the Legacy Interview Questionnaire.
    2. Highlight or circle 15 to 20 of the questions that you would like to include in your interview. You can also add additional questions you would like to answer.
    3. Think about or even write down the important points you would like to cover in your answers. If you are doing the interview with a spouse, you may want to discuss whether one or both of you will be responding to each question.
    4. Set up a quiet room in your home or office where you can conduct the interview.
    5. Have a recording device ready to record the interview. You can use a stand-alone recorder, your computer, tablet, or smart phone. There are many free recording programs available for you to download from the app store or from download.com. Let us know if you need a recommendation.
    6. Begin the interview by identifying who is being interviewed and the date of the interview. For example, “This is Joe and Jane Client conducting our Legacy Interview on January 1, 2014.”
    7. Conduct the interview by having one person ask a question and then allow time for you (or your spouse) to respond.  Repeat for each question you have selected.
    8. Once you have completed all of the questions, feel free to add any additional comments or thoughts that you did not cover or would like to discuss further.
    9. Close the interview with some final loving thoughts. If you do nothing else, make sure you say “I love you.”
    10. Save the interview to your device. We also recommend saving to your cloud storage account.
    11. Burn the recording to a cd and place in your estate planning binder.

Please contact our office if you need help with any of this process. We want to make sure that your legacy is preserved for your family!
